Apple country without the fall crowds: Oak Glen for a summer day trip

Most people in the region know Oak Glen only as a fall destination: u-pick apples, cider doughnuts, and a parking line that can stretch for an hour in October. The off-season pitch is the same scenery without the wait.

The drive climbs from Yucaipa into the foothills, where Los Rios Rancho pours fresh cider and opens its orchard walks, and Apple Annie's serves pie and rustic shopping a short way along the road. The Oak Glen Preserve runs meadow-and-creek trails through old oaks for anyone who wants to stretch the visit past the country stores.

One honest note for late June: parts of Oak Glen are seasonal, and a few orchard operations key their full hours to apple season, so it's worth a quick check on what's open before making the drive. The trails, the cider, and the views hold year-round.

It sits in San Bernardino County's eastern edge — close enough for a half-day out, far enough up to feel like a real change of altitude from the valley floor.
