Trade the valley heat for pines and galleries in Idyllwild this weekend

Visit California: Roughly 90 minutes from the corridor via Hwy 243 · Downtown along North Circle Drive, Idyllwild, CA · Free to wander; $5 Adventure Pass for trailhead parking

The town has long pulled artists and writers up the mountain, and it shows: small galleries, record and bookshops, and Café Aroma, a coffeehouse that rotates local painters on its walls. The wooden "Harmony" monument downtown anchors the village.

For hikers, the Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail is an easy 4.6-mile round trip out of Humber Park; stronger legs take Devil's Slide toward the San Jacinto Wilderness, with the San Jacinto Peak summit (10,834 ft) a serious all-day climb. Grab a parking permit in town first.

Summer runs warm and sunny up here while the valley bakes — pack a layer for the evening.
